Lunar Eclipse 2025 - Large Format Multi

from $59.99

This photograph is one of my most challenging (and therefore satisfying) astrophotography projects. I set out to capture an entire lunar eclipse transition sequence on a single large format (4×5”) slide of film through my telescope. Purely in camera with no editing, as is my general aim of creating tangible artifacts and my obsession with analog mediums.

To achieve this result, I had to modify a Nikon F5 (a 35mm stills camera) and adapt a custom designed and 3D printed 4×5 film back. Actually, I had to 3D print 11 of these backs, each positioned differently and precisely to compose my preplanned composition. This took weeks of printing, and I finished the last component the morning before I left for this shoot. I drove a [silly] 28 hour round trip to position myself in clear skies and a far enough west such that the end of the lunar eclipse was not too low on the horizon - you will notice that the second half of the eclipse sequence has a more yellow tint to it due to the low position in the sky and the light passing through more of our atmosphere.
